Smut That Doesn't Suck: Is My Hobby Weird?

Hey, do you like butts? If you said no, you're a filthy liar. After all, how would you sit properly without a butt? Ponder that for awhile, degenerate. Anyways, butts are pretty awesome, and we've been in a bit of a butt renaissance for the past few years. A renassance, if you will. No media is safe from this wave of butt love, and that includes lesbian smut. What, you thought yuri was all emotional fluff and foreplay? No, sometimes it gets pretty weird, like this one shot from Comaku (that will hopefully be a series). It has a simple premise; a lesbian really likes looking at butts and meets another lesbian who likes having her butt looked at. Butt stuff ensues.

Hey, not everything I show you here is going to make you feel smart or mature. But make no mistake, this is a great little story that totally has room to develop.

The story is about Maiko Fujiyama, a girl with a fetish for the butts of other girls. She usually catches up skirt angles from stairs in the train station, and uses what she sees to satisfy herself in private. She is a pervert, basically. But so is Risa Tsuzuki, a girl whom realizes she's being looked at by Maiko on a regular basis and enjoys it, as she's a bit of an exhibitionist when it comes to other girls. One day, she confronts Maiko about her actions and the two hit it off really fast, love forming from their shared and compatible interests. One loves butts and looking at them, and the other has a great butt and wants girls to look at it, there's never been a more perfect match in the history of the planet.

If you've been reading my reviews for awhile, you'd probably realize that I have an interest in characters with relationships based around compatible fetishes. It's an aspect of relationships ignored in a lot of media due to just how prudish people can get when it comes to sexuality, and any sort of fetish is treated as instantly disgusting and unfit for discussion as a result. But that's bizarre to me. Most everyone has some sort of fetish, and it's healthy to explore those interests. Relationships can be stronger for sharing those sides of yourself, a closer intimacy most are too afraid to explore. It's just damn interesting subject matter to me, which has made this one shot here stick in my mind for so long.

It catches your attention pretty fast. Most yuri work avoids exploring stranger fetishes, instead aiming to look at the public side of a relationship and how that affects those in it. Or, they simply get into the headspaces of those characters and go over what intimacy means to them as a way to express their emotion and love. But not this. First off, the relationship here is newly built, so the story chooses to have the two characters connecting on an initial superficial level. In a way, that's a bit more realistic. Second, there's no opposites attract narrative here, just two pieces that seem natural together. They're more similar than anything, both sexually aware and perverse in their interests. We don't really get to know them too much, which makes sense for a just starting relationship. And, of course, the story starts with the main character describing her hobby of looking at butts and describing her perfect type big and plump, by the way). Being that open about sexual leanings in a yuri story is really, really rare, especially when it's that specific and not a way to describe their feelings towards the love interest.

It really is unlike any other yuri out there, and it's well done too boot. The art is clean and draws your eye right where it needs to be, every butt is drawn with the subtle differences present, and the story itself is paced out just perfectly. It also makes its two perverse characters likable. Maiko's sheer openness of her sexuality in her narration is a strangely respectful quality, while Risa's ease of communicating with Maiko paints her as confident and comfortable with who she is, what she likes, and how she plans to get it. There's a good spark between the two, and the story even seems to suggest that there might be more to their connection beyond dealing with their sexual wants. There's more they seem to like about each other, like Maiko's meek personality when cornered, or Risa's confident manners.

It's just a cute little love story about two perverts with similar views of their sexuality. They like what they like and enjoy it. That's just refreshing to see nowadays. With so many prudes ruining everything for everyone through slut shaming and outdated ideas of gender roles, it's nicce seeing two very gay girls getting a bit weird and having a good time. Nobody gets hurt, and society didn't collapse because one girl buried her face into the other's juicy backside. I mean, this is still smut, but with so much smut in anime and manga being so full of horrid views on sexuality (natural male dominance, sexual entitlement, and so forth), it's hard finding something so innocent from the stranger side of the sexual shades. That alone makes this a little gem in a sea of rotten bird dookie.
